To have a way to reset or designate (seed) the starting number for a sequence in serial number calculations. Inputting data for testing increments the counter, but to go live, cannot restart the sequence. Also, cannot control the number of leading zeros as the ones, tens, hundreds roll over, so the field length continues to grow.
